Rocking Horse for Children

A wooden rocking horse is a classic toy of childhood. Its origins can be traced back to the Middle Ages and the hobby horse, a pretend horses head attached to a pole. The rocking horse became slowly more popular in the 17th century, and in Victorian times they became valuable family heirlooms, often with secret compartments concealed in their bellies. Horses were frequently grey and dappled in homage to Queen Victoria’s preferred steed.

There is still something wistful and nostalgic about a rocking horse, and children ride them with genuine delight. There are some superb vintage pieces available; a search on ebay or on etsy can yield some treasures.

Nowadays there are great modern twists on the classic rocking horse. Many are adapted for babies and often feature other animals. Rocking sheep, elephants and dinosaurs are now increasingly common. Innermost does a great one – we love this sheep rocker.
