Philippe Starck & Flos

Iconic names in lighting

Philippe Starck & Flos are 2 things that just work together. For many years these two design giants have worked together to produce some of the worlds best lamps.

In August Flos are celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the Gun Lamp family by Philippe Starck originally designed to spur debate between the collusion of war and money. Since the launch of the Gun Lamp family, Flos has donated 20% of the profits from the sales of the Gun Lamp to ‘Fratelli Dell’Uomo,’ a human rights organisation working in underdeveloped countries.

Marble – Tasteful and Luxurious

Marble products at Cimmermann

Marble is a stunning product that has been used for 100’s of years. From old Italian masters to modern day designers marble has always epitomised sheer indulgence and luxury.

A good way to introduce a piece of tactile marble into your home is with a light or a table. We choose some of our favourites –

Flos Arco Light

Arco Light is a design classic from Achille Castiglioni. We don’t need to say much about this icon of lighting design. One thing to remember is you won’t be able to move the base on your own – 60 kgs of the finest Italian marble.

e15 Enoki Tables

e15 Enoki Tables combine modern colours with the timeless quality of marble so fluidly. Cleverly toying with material, colour and dimensions, these versatile tables are available in combinations of rich marble and coloured steel.

&Tradition Shuffle Table

With the shuffle Table Mia Hamborg gives new life to the old Nordic craft tradition of turning wood by adding the colour and playful forms from old painted wooden toys. This new black marble version is stunning and adds an element of sophistication.

Flos Snoopy Light

A design classic from Achille Castiglioni. The base is made from the finest Italian marble and the shade from enamelled glass.

Vitra Plate Table

Simple form made with luxurious materials, the Plate Table offers a lesson in simplicity.  Quite in keeping with Jasper Morrison’s philosophy of “super normal” design, the Plate Coffee Tables have a classic shape and finely balanced proportions.

We love marble here at Cimmermann, the feel of it, the look of it and the fact each piece is unique – add some marble to your interior you won’t regret it.

Barber Osgerby – Designer Profile

Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby are internationally acclaimed designers who founded their eponymous studio Barber Osgerby in 1996 after graduating with Master’s degrees in Architecture from The Royal College of Art in London. From their first studio in Trellick Tower in London, they designed their first piece, the Loop Table, produced by Isokon in 1997. Much of Barber and Osgerby’s early work involved the folding and shaping of sheet material, influenced by the white card that they had used frequently in architectural model making.

With the Tab T light by Flos you can really see this. A quote from the designers – “The Tab lamp is a simple folded form, creating a visually pure shade that translates into a desk, and floor lamp.” The LED light used is one of the highest quality available and offers a great option for a desk, bedside table or side table.

A favourite new design of Barber & Osgerby is the Mariposa Sofa. It radiates an inviting aura of spacious comfort – and yet maintains a subtly understated presence thanks to its balanced proportions. The sofa owes its comfort, on the one hand, to the soft upholstery, which completely surrounds the sitter and prevents contact with any hard structural elements. On the other hand, an adjustment mechanism makes it possible to individually tilt the side and backrest elements for various sitting or reclining positions. The Mariposa Sofa does not openly display this function: the slim side and back elements can be continuously and silently adjusted, from an upright position to an outward angle of approximately 30° and back again. The resistance is calibrated in such a way that these elements stay in place when the sitter leans back in a normal fashion, but will adjust to the desired angle when intentional pressure is applied. This flexibility allows individual users to determine the position that is most comfortable for them. Thanks to the unusual depth of the seat surface, two people can sit on either end and comfortably face each other. Another favourite of ours is the Tipton chair by Vitra, it sets a new precedent in dynamic seating. Made from polypropylene TipTon has a unique leg design which enables the chair to be leaned forward so it gently stops in the forward position. This seat position has been confined to mechanical office chairs up to now but this simple device enables the hips and back to be tilted – thus improving blood flow. Tip Ton is formed from a single mould with no mechanical components – this makes it indestructible and 100% recyclable!

Barber & Osgerby are fast becoming design legends with a portfolio of products and designs that are truly original and unique. We believe investing in one of their designs is investing in a future Design Classic.

Suspension Lights – Iconic Favourites

A stunning suspension light can transform a space into something quite special. The Italians are really the market leaders with iconic brands such as Flos, Artemide, Foscarini and Kartell
Tom Dixon is flying the flag for us Brits with his iconic and individual lighting designs. George Nelson’s Bubble lights are superb lights that offer mid-century design from Modernica. For a Scandinavian fix Muuto do some cool and colourful designs.

Whatever your design style, when choosing a suspension light think about the following:

what sort of light do you want  – diffused, up/down light, bright light ?
do you have supplementary lighting or is it your only source of light in the room?
do you mind if you can see the bulb from below ?
length of cable – do you have a high ceiling ?
dimensions – too big will overpower, too small will look silly ?
cluster of lights – great option if you like a smaller light but have a big space ?

To help you along here are some of our iconic favourites.

Modernica Bubble Light
The bubble light by George Nelson is available in many shapes and sizes but our favourite is the Bubble Ball Light. Originally designed in 1947 they look as good today as they did all that time ago when they were first produced. The simple shape makes them perfect to compliment any interior design scheme. These lamps with their simple sculptural shapes were constructed of an innovative taut plastic that coated a steel wire-frame. Nelson’s unique design and ingenious use of materials prove to eliminate glare and provide an abundant, yet diffused light. A quality which alone is unique to this material and has yet to be bettered. These famous lamps are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
