Brazil – Modernism

Its not only Football Brazil has to offer

We love the World Cup (well one member of Cimmermann) but it s not only football Brazil excels in. Their modernist architecture is stunning, see some of our favourites –

Paraty House’s two reinforced concrete boxes, sit atop each other, connected on the mountainside of one of the islands of the colonial city of Paraty and Angra dos Reis (between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro), like two modern prisms between the large colossal stones of the Brazilian coast. The building projects outward from the mountain, almost onto the beach, in an 8m cantilever. The house finds balance in the topography of the land, creating an extensive open doorway and living space in the practically untouched nature. Paraty House features a furniture collection showcasing 20thcentury design, including works by many well-known artists.

Brazil’s most famous architect is Oscar Niemeyer, who is considered to be one of the key figures in the development of modern architecture. Niemeyer was best known for his design of civic buildings for Brasília, a planned city that became Brazil’s capital in 1960.

Dining Table’s – Our Favourites

top 5 wooden dining tables

A good wooden dining table is a thing of beauty and master craftsmanship. Whether you like a beautifully sleek finish or a more natural one exposing the beauty of raw wood we offer our advice and favourites –

1. e15 Bigfoot Table

The ultimate wooden table – e15 Bigfoot. It has become a real Design Classic since it was designed in 1994 by Philipp Mainzer. During the seasoning of solid wood, the legs form their characteristic cracks, which make every table unique and is considered a characteristic of the table. Bigfoot is a table which will age well and develop its own patina with time and lends itself to both formal and informal dining occasions.

2. Muuto Split Table

With Split, Muuto wanted the table to have an organic expression and to combine a structural solidity with a seemingly more delicate balancing act. The detail of the legs being split and bent has the expression and quality of a skilled cabinet-maker and is likely to become a hallmark of the Split Table. Split Table is a great partner with Muuto Nerd Chair.

Children’s Bedrooms

How To Design The Perfect Child’s Bedroom

How do you design a bedroom for the perfect child? No, that’s not really what we’re asking. No one is perfect, but with a bit of clever planning and investment in quality pieces, your child’s bedroom just might be.

Steer clear of fads

Of course you’re designing the bedroom for your child. But that doesn’t mean you should over-theme to suit their tastes. This may sound harsh, but think about how quickly they change their minds. If they love butterflies this month, they may not be so keen the next. You can invest in some classic pieces and still have fun. And if they are desperate for those butterflies, consider wall stickers or prints that can be easily replaced. has a good selection of tasteful vinyl wall stickers.

Keep the basics neutral

Good quality furniture will stand the test of time. If you keep the basics neutral, then toys and soft furnishings can inject colour and fun, and be tailored to your child’s personality. We love this colourful clothes stand – Paradise Tree by Magis

Whiteboard and blackboard paint is also a great way to allow your child to express his or her creativity.

Storage, storage, storage

Essential if you ever want to be able to push the door open and find a path to the wardrobe, good storage can work with the design of your room. This String storage system comes with cabinets, shelves and two desks.

And finally…once you’ve created the perfect room, he or she will want to share it with their friends! So don’t forget the soundproofing. Rugs will help to muffle those footsteps. Why not try this colourful HAY Pinnochio rug.
