Gubi – Brand In Focus

Scandinavian Masters

Gubi was founded in 1967 by Gubi and Lisbeth Olsen in Denmark. They initially focused on producing Olsen’s furniture designs and selling textiles to the retail sector.

The term ‘Chasing forgotten icons’ has led Gubi to re-launch a collection of designs from the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. As well as icons, their uncanny ability to recognise original ideas and inspirations has also resulted in a unique collection of exciting new designs from designers such as GamFratesi and Komplot Design.

Some of the stand-out and most recognisable designs from Gubi

The iconic Adnet mirror is a real stand out piece from Jacques Adnet. The mirror is made from hand-stitched Italian natural tanned full grain leather in black or tan and oozes quality.

Mategot Collection – Mathieu Matégot’s organic forms and lightness of touch create a sense of joy and the ground breaking and innovative techniques that he applied resulted in unique aesthetics and, above all, contemporary designs. Today, Matégot’s designs are equally fit for the purpose as when they were originally conceived, and his legendary designs are both timeless and classic. The Nagasaki chair is one of few three-legged chairs and is still Matégot’s best-known piece.  Gubi’s collection of original Mategot design include Nagasaki Chair, Dedal Shelf, Nagasaki Table and Mategot Coatrack.

The Pedrera family of lights were designed by Barba Corsini, a leading functionalist architect, in association with his protegé, Joaquim Ruiz Millet. In 1955, Corsini, realised his contemporary vision through his renovation of the La Pedrera loft space (designed by Gaudi) and the furnishings he custom designed for it- the Pedrera PD2 Floor Light, Pedrera Coffee Table and the Pedrera ANA Pendant Light

Dining Table’s – Our Favourites

top 5 wooden dining tables

A good wooden dining table is a thing of beauty and master craftsmanship. Whether you like a beautifully sleek finish or a more natural one exposing the beauty of raw wood we offer our advice and favourites –

1. e15 Bigfoot Table

The ultimate wooden table – e15 Bigfoot. It has become a real Design Classic since it was designed in 1994 by Philipp Mainzer. During the seasoning of solid wood, the legs form their characteristic cracks, which make every table unique and is considered a characteristic of the table. Bigfoot is a table which will age well and develop its own patina with time and lends itself to both formal and informal dining occasions.

2. Muuto Split Table

With Split, Muuto wanted the table to have an organic expression and to combine a structural solidity with a seemingly more delicate balancing act. The detail of the legs being split and bent has the expression and quality of a skilled cabinet-maker and is likely to become a hallmark of the Split Table. Split Table is a great partner with Muuto Nerd Chair.

The Hay Copenhague Table is a stylish and contemporary table designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Hay. It is part of a collection of furniture which has been designed for the University of Copenhagen. The Copenhague Table is a simple design with an uncomplicated identity.

Available in 3 different colours – Oak, Walnut or Black-stained Ash and 3 different shapes – Round, Ellipse and Rectangular. This Gubi Table has a retro/vintage Scandinavian feel to us and looks stunning mixed with a modern chair.

5. Tom Dixon Slab table

A solid oak table with a brushed surface finish, available in Black or Natural. Amazingly raw and solid design that highlights the quality and finish of the oak. As with all Tom Dixon‘s designs this oozes timeless appeal yet has such a significant but simple design – we love it!

Jens Risom

Mid-Century Master

Jens Risom, who was born in Copenhagen in 1916, describes himself as a Danish-born, American designer, not a Danish designer. His father Sven Risom was an award-winning architect and Risom says he lived with wonderful design for years before he “really got into it professionally.”
He attended the School for Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen where he became close to Hans Wegner, one of the few designers whose furniture he has in his own home. He trained under Kaare Klint, the principal founder of the furniture school at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1938, he left for the United States where he thought he’d have a better chance of making a name for himself. One of the first designers to bring the traditional Scandinavian values of function and craftsmanship to the United States, Risom was part of a new vanguard that helped establish post-war America’s leadership role in the world of modern furniture design and manufacturing.

At ninety-four years of age Jens Risom collaborated with Rocket and Benchmark, who jointly secured the European rights to reissue his 1950s and 1960s furniture designs.

This first collection of nine pieces has been creatively directed by Jonathan Stephenson of Rocket and made by Sean Sutcliffe and Terence Conran’s Benchmark Furniture company in their Dorset and Berkshire workshops – with the close involvement of Risom himself. These pieces are available in oak and walnut versions and are upholstered in a variety of Kvadrat fabrics and Elmo leathers. Some of the stunning range can be seen below.
