Brazil – Modernism

Its not only Football Brazil has to offer

We love the World Cup (well one member of Cimmermann) but it s not only football Brazil excels in. Their modernist architecture is stunning, see some of our favourites –

Paraty House’s two reinforced concrete boxes, sit atop each other, connected on the mountainside of one of the islands of the colonial city of Paraty and Angra dos Reis (between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro), like two modern prisms between the large colossal stones of the Brazilian coast. The building projects outward from the mountain, almost onto the beach, in an 8m cantilever. The house finds balance in the topography of the land, creating an extensive open doorway and living space in the practically untouched nature. Paraty House features a furniture collection showcasing 20thcentury design, including works by many well-known artists.

Gubi – Brand In Focus

Scandinavian Masters

Gubi was founded in 1967 by Gubi and Lisbeth Olsen in Denmark. They initially focused on producing Olsen’s furniture designs and selling textiles to the retail sector.

The term ‘Chasing forgotten icons’ has led Gubi to re-launch a collection of designs from the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. As well as icons, their uncanny ability to recognise original ideas and inspirations has also resulted in a unique collection of exciting new designs from designers such as GamFratesi and Komplot Design.

Some of the stand-out and most recognisable designs from Gubi

The iconic Adnet mirror is a real stand out piece from Jacques Adnet. The mirror is made from hand-stitched Italian natural tanned full grain leather in black or tan and oozes quality.

Mategot Collection – Mathieu Matégot’s organic forms and lightness of touch create a sense of joy and the ground breaking and innovative techniques that he applied resulted in unique aesthetics and, above all, contemporary designs. Today, Matégot’s designs are equally fit for the purpose as when they were originally conceived, and his legendary designs are both timeless and classic. The Nagasaki chair is one of few three-legged chairs and is still Matégot’s best-known piece.  Gubi’s collection of original Mategot design include Nagasaki Chair, Dedal Shelf, Nagasaki Table and Mategot Coatrack.

The Pedrera family of lights were designed by Barba Corsini, a leading functionalist architect, in association with his protegé, Joaquim Ruiz Millet. In 1955, Corsini, realised his contemporary vision through his renovation of the La Pedrera loft space (designed by Gaudi) and the furnishings he custom designed for it- the Pedrera PD2 Floor Light, Pedrera Coffee Table and the Pedrera ANA Pendant Light

Dining Table’s – Our Favourites

top 5 wooden dining tables

A good wooden dining table is a thing of beauty and master craftsmanship. Whether you like a beautifully sleek finish or a more natural one exposing the beauty of raw wood we offer our advice and favourites –

1. e15 Bigfoot Table

The ultimate wooden table – e15 Bigfoot. It has become a real Design Classic since it was designed in 1994 by Philipp Mainzer. During the seasoning of solid wood, the legs form their characteristic cracks, which make every table unique and is considered a characteristic of the table. Bigfoot is a table which will age well and develop its own patina with time and lends itself to both formal and informal dining occasions.

2. Muuto Split Table

With Split, Muuto wanted the table to have an organic expression and to combine a structural solidity with a seemingly more delicate balancing act. The detail of the legs being split and bent has the expression and quality of a skilled cabinet-maker and is likely to become a hallmark of the Split Table. Split Table is a great partner with Muuto Nerd Chair.

This Gubi Table has a retro/vintage Scandinavian feel to us and looks stunning mixed with a modern chair.
